Tips For Your Session

Tip #1: Get a good night’s sleep.

We know it’s tempting to stay at the networking event for one more drink, or to watch just one more episode on Netflix. Getting an extra hour or two of sleep will make a considerable difference for your shoot the following day. If you are feeling relaxed and positive, your pictures will reflect that. This will also help reduce bags under eyes, making you look more radiant.

Tip #2: What to wear

People can be unsure of what to wear for a a professional photo shoot. I always suggest wearing what you would when meeting a potential client. Even though a headshot is usually just head and shoulders, I might include some shots that are more half and ¾ shots. Take time with hair and make-up. Photoshop can only do so much and you will want to look natural and put-together in the final shots. Stay away from trends or bold patterns. Solid colors always look best; they don’t take away from the main focus. Your headshot should last at least 2 years and you won’t want to date the image. Ladies, I suggest long-sleeve tops or jackets, and go with what you know looks good, like your ‘go- to’ outfit or the one that garners the most compliments.

Tip # 3: How to pose

Don’t worry; I will help you with this. Mostly, I’m looking for you to be relaxed, comfortable and having fun. If you are like me and don’t necessarily like to have your photo taken, my job is to help you make it a memorable experience with headshots you love and want to use.

Tip #4: Work your best side.

Lots of people are aware of having a ‘best side’. This can be due to the shape or symmetry of their face, or even trying to hide a perceived imperfection. Don’t be shy about telling me what your preferences are.

Tip # 5: Look in a mirror.

Rehearse your facial expressions. Everyone prefers the way they look with a certain expression. A full or half smile could work well with a young and passionate entrepreneur. Alternatively, a CEO or a board member in a professional industry may feel a neutral expression communicates strength. Either way, we’ll shoot it both ways to give you plenty of choices. When posing, try squinting your eyes very slightly–some call this a squinch–to bring out a real smile. Think of someone you care about, someone who makes you smile. The real emotion will not only help with your smile but also show in your eyes.

Tip #6: Relax.

Relax and let me lead you through the session. Most people feel a little awkward having their photo taken–it’s only natural. My job is to build your trust and confidence, and establish a rapport. Guys, bring any accessories that may be needed. For example: wardrobe, brush, comb, lotion, glasses, hats, floss, etc. Ladies, you too. For example: wardrobe, brush, comb, lotion, glasses, hats, floss, etc. The most important things to remember are try to look and feel your best, relax and have fun!
